  FC Beaconsfield - Friendly (24/08/2008)
2008 - 2009 Season, Afc Hithercroft

Afc Hithercroft’s final pre-season friendly took place at the Holtspur ground of FC Beaconsfield, the team being made up of both their Saturday and Sunday teams. The weather was mainly dry and sunny but interrupted by some dark clouds and occasional spots of rain. Hithercroft, despite having a few players absent, were able to field five substitutes and Neil Stretton made a return as goalkeeper. Mr Kenroy Charles officiated and Pat Vaughey ran the line for Hithercroft until the 78th minute when Pam Ife took over.

At 12.42pm the game got under way with Hithercroft playing towards the sun when it was not obscured by clouds. The first goal was scored on 25 minutes when the Beaconsfield No.17 (Eugene Hepburn) received the ball and struck an 18-yard shot into the net to put the home side 1-0 ahead. On 30 minutes Eugene again took the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box and hit an on-target shot but Neil Stretton dived to gather it. On 41 minutes Beaconsfield took a corner-kick which curved in towards the goal but Neil rose up to punch the ball over the crossbar. In the 44th minute Beaconsfield threw the ball in 18-yards from the Hithercroft goal and Eugene blasted the ball into the far left-hand side of the goal to put Beaconsfield 2-0 ahead by half-time.

The second half began at 1.35pm and after 5 minutes of play the Beaconsfield No.8 put his side 3-0 ahead with a shot to the middle of the Hithercroft net. However, within 60 seconds Ryan Forbes sent the ball through to Lyle Edwards, who had come on at the start of the second half, and Lyle struck the ball home from about 20 yards to put Hithercroft on the score sheet. On 59 minutes Zeesham Ullah, on the left, sent a long ball forward into the middle from where Denzil Johnson headed the ball on to Harry Young. Harry hammered the ball past the advancing keeper to bring Hithercroft back to just 2-3 behind. After a further 12 minutes Beaconsfield played the ball down the centre and their No.15 took the ball into the 18-yard box before slotting it past the keeper for a 4-2 lead. On 78 minutes Beaconsfield’s Asher Jennings took possesion of the ball about 30 yards from the Hithercroft goal and hit a curving shot that left Neil rooted to the spot as he watched it enter the top left-hand corner of the net for Beaconsfield’s 5th. This 5-2 scoreline remained unchanged up to the final whistle.

It was a disappointing result given that Hithercroft had emerged 3-1 winners in the first meeting but Hithercroft had put in a good performance which, if carried through into their league games, should provide a basis for good results in the coming season.
