Thame United Social Club - League (02/12/2007)
2007 - 2008 Season, Afc Hithercroft

It was a dismal day for this return fixture at the Pedestal with rain, cloud and strong gusty wind for most of the game. The pitch became muddy and slippery making conditions very difficult for both sides. Thame United Social Club wore an all-yellow kit whilst Afc Hithercroft played in their usual kit. Pat Vaughey ran the line for the home team and the referee was Mr C. Glennerster.

The game got under way at 10.37am with Hithercroft playing from left to right when viewed from the clubhouse. After 3 minutes Thame took the ball down the left and lifted the ball over Neil Stretton, the Hithercroft keeper, but Luke Revell headed the ball clear from the goal-line. One minute later the referee called a halt to the game whilst a search was made to locate his spectacles that had been dropped on the pitch. They were soon found and so the game resumed. In the 11th minute the Thame No.9, Mark Wingfield, struck the ball diagonally into the left-hand side of the net to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. A corner from the left, two from the right and another from the left followed in quick succession for Hithercroft but produced no goals. In the 15th minute Hithercroft had a number of shots at the Thame goal but each was blocked by defenders until Frank Smith managed to slip the ball through a gap into the back of the net to level the score. By the interval neither side had added to their solitary goals.

The rain had died away but the wind was still very gusty when the second half started at 11.29am. One minute after the restart Baz David sent the ball across the goalmouth and Ryan Forbes ran in but hit it just wide of the upright. On 55 minutes Frank headed the ball out to Baz on the left and Baz’s shot hit the crossbar. More attacks from both sides followed but shots were mainly off-target or cut-out by defenders. Baz came close again when the Thame keeper came out of his 18-yard box with the ball and mis-kicked his clearance to Baz. Baz tried a shot at the open goal but his shot went wide. In the 77th minute Ryan sent the ball into the 18-yard box and John Baldock ran in and headed the ball into the net, only to be ruled off-side. Two minutes later the Thame No.14 gathered the ball on the right and crossed it inside where Mark Wingfield mis-kicked a shot outside of the left-hand post. On 82 minutes Hithercroft were awarded a free kick and Baz sent a high ball into the 18-yard box. Kris Clark headed the ball against the crossbar and Tyrone Francis followed up to head the ball into the net to put Hithercroft 2-1 ahead. On 88 minutes, following an 8 minute spell of sunshine, the rain began again and this time it was torrential. Hithercroft continued to maintain pressure on their opponents but were unable to add to their two goals before the final whistle blew.
