Cressex - League (20/04/2008)
2007 - 2008 Season, Afc Hithercroft
It was dull and overcast at Cressex School for this important match
against current Division 2 leaders FC Cressex, Afc Hithercroft needing
to win this game to keep alive hopes of emerging champions of the
division. There was a cold wind blowing throughout the game during
which Ken Johnson ran the line for Hithercroft and Mr M. Weedon took
charge. Ryan Forbes was not available for this game, Luke Revell had
injured his ankle in a game on Saturday being present but unable to
play, and Jason Guy rang up just before the start to ask if there
was a game!. Dan Birch’s girlfriend went to pick Jason up but
he didn’t arrive until the game had been under way for over
20 minutes.
The
game began at 10.32am and after 9 minutes Afc Hithercroft were awarded
a corner-kick from the right. Baz David sent the ball in, Tyrone Francis
headed the ball on and a defending player rose up to use his hand
to clear the ball. Unfortunately the referee ignored calls from the
Hithercroft players for a penalty kick. On 21 minutes there was an
incident between the Cressex No.8 and Kevin Howell, both of them receiving
a talking-to from the referee. On 32 minutes the Cressex No.7 had
his name entered into the referee’s book from bringing down
a Hithercroft player from behind. Kevin took the resulting free-kick
from just inside the Cressex half, the keeper going down to block
it and then having to re-gather it as Frank Smith followed in. On
38 minutes Josh Peters was shown a yellow card for a rash challenge
and the Cressex No.14 hit the long free-kick that Neil Stretton safely
gathered on the goal-line. Just before the half-time whistle Kevin
sent the ball forward, Baz took it down the left wing, turned inside
and hit a shot that had the keeper diving to push wide.
At 11.22am the second half began and after 4 minutes Dan Allman was
yellow-carded following a trip on an opponent. On 57 minutes Hithercroft
sent on Dave Ebberson to replace Michael Louise and four minutes later
Mark Charman, who had recently received an injury, was replaced by
Jason Guy. In the 69th minute Hithercroft had a scoring opportunity
when Josh collected the ball, took it into the 18-yard box but then
hit it wide of the left-hand post. Hithercroft now began to pressurize
the Cressex goal, winning a number of throw-ins and corner kicks but
were unable to capitalize. Frank had a shot that went just wide of
the left-hand post and then Kris Clark, from a corner kick, hit a
shot from 10 yards that went outside the right-hand post. The final
whistle went after 2 minutes of added time but neither side had managed
to score, this being the first scoreless draw that Hithercroft had
been involved in this season.
Although Hithercroft had made a number of shooting opportunities they
once again failed to make the most of them and this result meant that
their chance to gain promotion had now evaporated.
