Sporting Wycombe - League (28/10/2007)
2007 - 2008 Season, Afc Hithercroft
The
weather was cloudy with fine rain falling throughout the game and
there was a strong wing blowing along the Fernie Fields pitch. The
surface was damp and became muddier as the game progressed. Baz David
had returned from injury but Tyrone Francis was still recovering,
whilst Jason Guy and Ashley Anderson were both absent. Pat Vaughey
ran the line for Hithercroft and the referee was Mr E. Faulkner.
The game began at 10.34am with Hithercroft playing up the slight slope
but having the wind behind them. The first half was fairly uneventful
with Hithercroft having a number of throw-ins, corners and free-kicks
but made little progress. In the 23rd minute the Wycombe keeper sent
the ball down the middle of the pitch from a goal kick which Kevin
Howell blasted back but Kevin’s shot went wide of the left-hand
post. By the end of the half neither side had managed to score.
In the second half Frank Smith took a free-kick from 10 yards inside
the Wycombe half after Dwayne Blake had been brought down but his
shot dipped just over the crossbar. Later Frank took another free-kick
and let fly at the goal but the Wycombe keeper managed to block it.
In the 71st minute Hithercroft defender Kris Clark was adjudged to
have handled the ball inside the 18-yard box and the referee awarded
a penalty kick. Omar Ashad took the kick and, although keeper Neil
Stretton dived the right way, the ball went under his body and into
the net to give Wycombe a 1-0 lead. At this point Mike Baldock took
to the field to replace Dwayne Blake. Wycombe began to take charge
of the game from this point onwards and, in the 77th minute, made
two substitutions whilst John Baldock went on to replace Ryan Forbes.
Two minutes later Wycombe’s Majid Khan hit a long hard shot
from 35 yards out on the left and the ball dipped down beneath the
Hithercroft crossbar to extend the home team’s lead. In the
86th minute Wycombe tied up the game when the ball was played into
the middle and Rudi Awas chipped the ball over Neil, as he came forward,
to give Wycombe a 3-0 victory.
