Wycombe
Town 'A' (26/11/2006)
2006 - 2007 Season, Afc Hithercroft
Throughout this game there were spells of rain interspersed
with some dry and sunny intervals but the ground was very wet and
slippery. The scheduled referee, Mr D. Simmonds, failed to turn up
and was not answering his phone and so Brian Lewis took charge of
the match whilst Pam Ife ran the line. Hithercroft were without defenders
Dougie Carswell, Leon Browne and Kris Clark and strikers Ashley Anderson
and Kevin Howell on this occasion and had no subs available.
The game eventually
got under way at 10.53am and both sides were fairly evenly matched
during the first part of the game. In the 25th minute Frank Smith
played the ball down the left wing to Baz David, the Hithercroft
captain, and Baz took it to within a yard of the corner flag before
sending in a curving shot that ended up inside the far post to put
the home side 1-0 ahead. However, the lead only lasted for 60 seconds
before Town’s Neil Robbins took advantage of a failure to
clear a loose ball and sent it into the back of the Hithercroft
net to level the score. Just before half-time Frank Smith and Richard
McKie moved the ball down the left and crossed it into the 6-yard
box but their striker, despite being positioned near the middle
of the goal, hit it wide of the left-hand post.
At 11.44am the
second half began and after two minutes Frank sent in a corner-kick
but Tyrone Francis’ shot was cleared from the goal-line. In
the 53rd minute the ball entered Town’s 18-yard box and the
keeper went down on it as Baz was running onto it. As Baz attempted
to avoid the keeper he went down and injured his right knee and
had to be helped from the pitch for treatment. After five minutes
he returned but was unable to continue and had to retire from the
game leaving Hithercroft with just 10 players. Town made some substitutions
and in the 65th minute they brought the ball into the 18-yard box
from the left and Simon Allen hit a long shot into the far side
of the net to put the visitors 2-1 ahead. Three minutes later the
score-line was almost levelled when Tyrone hit a 35-yard shot towards
the top right-hand corner of the net but the Town keeper rose up
to gather it. Town began to get on top with their extra player advantage
and the Hithercroft striker being hampered with a groin strain with
which he had started the game. The Town No.8 took a diving header
as the ball came in low from the right-hand side but sent the ball
just outside the right-hand post. In the 70th minute Richard McKie
jinked round a couple of Town defenders and hit a shot that the
diving keeper pushed round the post. Four minutes later Hithercroft
were temporarily reduced to 9 players when Tyrone, who had taken
over the captaincy on Baz’s departure, also left the field
for treatment to a knee injury. Town took the ball down the middle
and hit a shot that rebounded from the Hithercroft keeper and Neil
Robbins ran in to tap the ball home to put Wycombe Town ‘A‘
3-1 ahead. Tyrone then returned to take up his centre-back position
but Town were now in the driving seat. On 88 minutes they played
the ball down the left and, as the Hithercroft keeper came forward,
Simon Allen hit the ball past him into the open goal to give Town
a 4-1 victory.
Hithercroft
have recently been suffering from a lack of strong reserve players
to cover for absentees through illness, injuries or work commitments.
Following a strong start to the season they have begun to falter
and need to sign-up some new players to reverse this trend.
