Three
Horseshoes (04/02/2007)
2006 - 2007 Season, Afc Hithercroft
After an overnight frost the sun had cleared the frost from the Hazlemere
Rec pitch but it remained slippery and slightly muddy. Hithercroft’s
players were a little late in arriving and some failed to turn up
at all, leaving Hithercroft with just eleven players and no substitutes.
The referee was Mr P. McGann and Pam Ife ran the line for Hithercroft.
The
game got under way at 10.40am and the first half was played out fairly
evenly but with Hithercroft just shading it. Both sides had attacking
opportunities but their on-target shots were easily taken care of
by the opposing goalkeeper and neither side managed to get on the
score sheet.
Just
one minute into the second half Stuart Cutts put the Shoes 1-0 up
with a well-taken goal and it was expected that this would spur the
visitors into action. However, four minutes later the referee awarded
a penalty kick to the Shoes and James Rees sent the ball into the
left-hand side of the goal to give his side a 2-0 lead. On 56 minutes
Shoes made their first sustitution replacing No.11 (Simon Bennett)
with No.14. On the hour-mark Stuart Cutts received the ball from the
right and hit the ball just inside the right-hand post to give Shoes
a 3-0 lead. Three minutes later they made another substitution replacing
their No.6 with No.12. In the 67th minute Tyrone Francis came close
to pulling one back for Hithercroft when he took the ball into the
18-yard box and struck the ball towards the top of the goalmouth but
keeper Bruno Figueiredo rose up to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Hithercroft had begun to pressurise their opponents and were awarded
a number of free-kicks and corners but were unable to get the ball
into their opponents’ net. Much to the surprise of Hithercroft
the referee ended the game 10 minutes early but it was very unlikely
that they would have been able to pull back the 3-goal deficit.
