Pheasant
- B & B Cup (08/10/2006)
2006 - 2007 Season, Afc Hithercroft
For this
first-round game in the B & B Junior Cup the weather was sunny
and with no noticeable wind. It took place on the Rye and the pitch
was damp and therefore slightly slippery. The last time that these
two sides met Hithercroft were well below strength and lost their
only league game of the season so far by a 4-1 margin. Hithercroft
were still without defenders David Blackman and Kris Clark and striker
Simon Woodbine but Baz David and Tyrone Francis were available with
one substitute present. Some positional changes were necessary with
Frank Smith moving back into a defensive role, Ashley Anderson having
been moved up front where he performed superbly last week. The referee
was Mr P. McGann and Pam Ife ran the line for Hithercroft.
The game kicked off at 10.35am and Pheasant initially seemed to have
the ‘edge’ on their visitors. After four minutes Matt
Tew (No.10) hit a long shot that passed wide of the right-hand post
and two minutes later Norman McCorkill (No.7) went down the left,
beat a couple of defenders and shot just outside the left-hand upright.
In the eighth minute Pheasant broke down the left and Norman McCorkill
again struck the ball just outside the left post. Hithercroft then
began to settle into the game and five minutes later Richard McKie
pushed the ball left to Baz David. Baz went to the edge of the 18-yard
box and hit a shot just outside the left-hand post. After fifteen
minutes Richard pushed the ball forward to Ashley Anderson who then
turned and struck the ball to the right of the keeper but the keeper
dived and got a hand to the ball, pushing it onto the woodwork. The
ball rebounded to Ashley and this time his shot was pushed round the
left-hand post. Baz took the ball down the left, passed it across
to Kevin Howell who sent it forward for Baz to re-gather. Baz was
brought down just outside the penalty area and from the resulting
free-kick, that was taken by Kevin, the ball went to Dewayne Dublin
on the far post but there were no Hithercroft players to take advantage
of Dewayne’s header across the goal-mouth. On the 20-minute
mark Baz was again brought down, this time just inside the Pheasant
half and on the left. Frank Smith took the free-kick, sending a high
ball forward, and the Pheasant defence pushed the ball back which
fell to Baz. Baz sent the ball forward to Kevin, who chipped it over
the advancing keeper to put Hithercroft 1-0 ahead. Shortly after the
restart Tyrone Francis was brought down and the game was held up for
two minutes whilst he received treatment to his back. On 25 minutes
Dewayne brought the ball in from the left, the Pheasant keeper came
out to meet him but Dewayne side-stepped him and sent the ball into
the middle towards goal. Two defenders raced back to the goal-line
but were unable to prevent the ball from going into the back of the
net and so Hithercroft were now 2 goals up. Three minutes later Tyrone
had a shot from 25 yards out in the middle of the pitch but the ball
went just wide of the left-hand post. On 32 minutes Baz won the ball
near his corner flag, sent it forward to Richard who passed the ball
back for Baz to run onto. The keeper came out and Baz chipped the
ball over his head, only for a covering defender to head the ball
out of play, presenting Hithercroft with a corner kick. Kevin sent
the ball into the 6-yard box and Richard rose up but was unable to
direct his glancing header into the net. Two minutes before half-time
Pheasant were awarded a corner on the right-hand side and their No.7
sent a chest-high ball across the goal-mouth, Steve Brooks (No.8)
pushing the ball just outside of the far post.
The second half began at 11.27am, Pheasant having made their first
substitution at the interval. Hithercroft continued to keep up the
pressure on their opponents and, in the 7th minute of the second half,
Frank sent the ball forward to Ashley. He went round a defender and
struck the ball from just inside the 18-yard box into the back of
the Pheasant net to put Hithercroft 3-0 ahead. In the 59th minute,
just after Dewayne had headed wide of the Pheasant goal, the home
team made their second substitution, sending on No.17 to replace Norman
McCorkill. On 62 minutes a Hithercroft goal-kick fell to their latest
sub, who was given plenty of time to set up a shot by the static defence,
but he hit the ball wide. At this point Hithercroft withdrew Dewayne
and sent on Jamaine Humphrey as replacement. Baz collected a long
ball on the left in the 67th minute, crossed it into the middle but
the Hithercroft shot was blocked by the keeper but rebounded to Baz.
Baz made no mistake with his shot and put the visitors 4-0 ahead.
Five minutes later he sent the ball in from a corner kick on the left
and Kevin, at the near post, headed the ball inside the far post to
score Hithercroft’s fifth. Within sixty seconds Tyrone played
the ball to Jamaine Humphrey and he sent if forward for Ashley to
collect, take into the 18-yard box and increase his side’s lead.
On 78 minutes Richard played the ball out left to Baz and, from the
edge of the penalty area he sent a great shot into the top right-hand
corner of the net to put Hithercroft 7-0 ahead. Seven minutes from
the end of the game Pheasant scored when Steve Brooks (No.8) headed
in the high ball from a corner on the left. However, two minutes later
Ashley was brought down 30 yards from the Pheasant goal and was awarded
a free kick. Frank’s shot rebounded from the right-hand post
but Ashley ran in to tuck the ball home to make the final score 8-1
to Hithercroft.
