Greyhound
(21/01/2007)
2006 - 2007 Season, Afc Hithercroft
It was
sunny but very chilly with a gusty wind for the duration of this
second meeting of these two sides. The ground was in fair condition
but tended to cut up during the game. The referee was Mr J. Bird
and Pam Ife ran the line for Afc Hithercroft.
The
game kicked off at 10.31am and after 9 minutes Greyhound took the
lead from a free-kick that had been awarded for a hand-ball offence.
Bobby Hughes took the kick and the ball hit the underside of the
crossbar as it went into the back of the net. In the 15th minute
Greyhounds John O’Leary received the ball in the right of
the Hithercroft 18-yard box and, despite being tackled by two of
his opponents, managed to retain possession, turn and send the ball
into the far corner of the net to put his side 2-0 ahead. One minute
later Greyhound floated in a free-kick and keeper Neil Stretton
went up to gather the ball but was in collision with two of the
Greyhound players, injuring his left knee and requiring some attention.
On the 20-minute mark Neil was back in action, leaping up to tip
a goal-bound shot over the crossbar. After about 30 minutes of the
half two Greyhound players rose up to head the ball and one of them
sustained an injury to his cheekbone - possibly a fracture. A substitute
was sent on to take his place and I then took the injured player
to the A & E Department of Wycombe General Hospital to be checked
out. No further scoring took place in the remainder of the first
half.
I returned
in the 58th minute of the game, having missed Greyhound’s
third goal two minutes earlier, a header into the bottom right-hand
corner of the net from Will Stockwell. I was just in time to see
Ashley Anderson open the scoring for Hithercroft when a shot, blocked
by the Greyhound keeper, fell to Ashley and he ran in to push the
ball under the keeper’s body. On 78 minutes Greyhound extended
their lead when Bobby Hughes took the ball to the left and crossed
it into the far side of the home team’s net. Hithercroft came
close to scoring again when Baz David took a corner kick on the
left and curved the ball in but was denied by the Greyhound keeper,
who rose up to gather it at the far post. In the 86th minute Baz
sent the ball in from a free-kick, the keeper pushed it clear but
Ashley ran in and struck the ball into the back of the net for Hithercroft’s
second goal. Hithercroft then began to put their opponents under
a lot of pressure, winning a number of corners and free-kicks. On
89 minutes Baz sent the ball in from a corner on the left which
was again pushed out but Frank Smith’s return shot just missed
the top left-hand corner of the net. When the final whistle went
Greyhound had retained this season’s unbeaten record with
a 4-2 win.
