  Biffa (03/09/2006)
2006 - 2007 Season, Afc Hithercroft

The weather had been wet overnight and in the early morning but just before the kick-off the rain stopped and most of the game was played in dry and bright weather. Biffa wore red and white vertical striped shirts, black shorts and red socks and so Hithercroft wore their blue and yellow shirts, blue shorts and blue/yellow socks. The home team are still without a goalkeeper and so Dougie Carswell went in goal for this game. The referee was Mr Phil Whiteson and Pam Ife again ran the line for Hithercroft.

The game kicked off at 10.34am with Hithercroft playing from right to left as viewed from the clubhouse and the home team were soon pressurising their opponents. Simon Woodbine sent a diving header just over the crossbar and Richard ‘Magic‘ McKie hit a 30-yard shot that had the Biffa keeper, Ian Michael, diving to push the ball round the post. In the 11th minute Hithercroft sent the ball to the edge of their opponents‘ 18-yard box and Paul Morgan, with his back to the goal, hit an overhead kick that sent the ball just inside the left-hand post to open the scoring. One minute later Darren Whittaker hit a shot from a Biffa corner-kick but Hithercroft‘s Tyrone Francis cleared the ball from his goal-line. In the 25th minute David Blackman played a long ball down the left, Frank Smith gave chase and crossed the ball inside where Simon Woodbine hit the ball into the back of the Biffa net to put Hithercroft 2-0 ahead. Seven minutes later Simon injured his knee and left the field for a few minutes to receive treatment. On 35 minutes Tyrone sent the ball out left to Frank who, despite slipping and going down as he brought the ball forward got up, took the ball round the Biffa keeper and slotted in Hithercroft‘s third goal. Simon was able to return for the restart of the game. From a Biffa corner-kick on the right a high ball went into the Hithercroft 6-yard box and Darren Whittaker rose up to put the ball past the keeper in the 37th minute putting Biffa onto the score-sheet. However, from the restart Frank took the ball down the left wing, turned inside and hit a fierce diagonal shot into the far side of the net to restore Hithercroft‘s 3 goal lead. Baz David had to temporarily leave the field with a chest injury whilst a shot from Paul Morgan in the 41st minute had the Biffa keeper diving to push the ball out for a corner.

Neither side made any changes during the break and the second half kicked off at 11.36am, the sun finally breaking through the clouds for the remainder of the game. After 9 minutes of second-half play Simon aggravated his knee injury and came off for further attention. Two minutes later Paul took the ball down the middle through the Biffa defence and hit it into the far left-hand corner of the net to give Hithercroft their fifth goal. As Simon was unable to continue Jamaine Humphrey came on to replace his as the game restarted. In the 58th minute Biffa replaced Iain Willcocks with Dan Fryer and in the 62nd minute Hithercroft replaced Leon Browne with Jamaine Warner. One minute later Baz set off on a long run, jinking left and right around the Biffa defenders before increasing Hithercroft’s lead to 6-1 by sending the ball into the right-hand side of the net. Following a free-kick awarded to the visitors in the 67th minute Steve Martin hit the ball through a crowd of players into the net to give Biffa their second goal. Four minutes later Baz had to leave the field with a bleeding nose and a swelling near his eye after he was hit in the face by a powerfully-struck ball, Peter Morgan going on as his replacement. On the 82nd minute mark Frank received the ball on the left of the field in open space, ran towards the Biffa goal and unleashed a shot from 18-yards out that brought him his hat trick and gave Hithercroft a 7-2 lead that remained unchanged until the final whistle.

An ambulance had been called as Baz’s condition had worsened and it was suspected that he had concussion. After treatment at Stoke Mandeville hospital he was allowed home later in the day.
