Snooker
Leisure Res (30/10/2005)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth

This match took place in cloudy overcast conditions with occasional
short but light showers on a damp and spongy pitch. Coach Brian Lewis
was off to Barcelona and so Pat Vaughey took charge of the Hithercroft
team with Pam Ife running the line and Clive Chard refereeing. Hithercroft
had a full complement of three subs but Jonny Bartlett, who also attended,
was not put on the subs list as he is still having trouble with the
thumb that he injured in last week's game.
The game got under way at 10.28am with a moderate wind blowing towards
the Snooker Leisure Reserves' goal. After just 14 minutes of play
SLR made their first substitution as the home side were beginning
to take control of the game. Hithercroft came close to opening the
scoring in the 23rd minute when Tyrone Francis crossed the ball to
Matt Seaton whose shot then bounced off the top of the crossbar and
went out for a goal kick. However, it was SLR who took the lead in
the 29th minute when, from a throw-in on their right, a forward took
the ball on a diagonal run from the right corner of the 18-yard box
through a static Hithercroft defence and hit it into the far left
of the net. Three minutes later Hithercroft were awarded a corner
kick and the ball was cleared down the middle to Mark Sadler, who
was positioned just inside the SLR half. He struck a superb shot that
rocketed just below the Snooker crossbar to level the score. On 38
minutes Baz David needed attention to his knee following a jarring
tackle but he was able to continue after treatment.
The second half began at 11.19am and after four minutes Tyrone Francis
needed treatment to a strained leg muscle. A short while later Baz
took a kick on his left shin and once again Pat went on to provide
the treatment. A free kick was awarded to Hithercroft for this offence
at the edge of the 18-yard box but Alan McKie blasted his kick high
over the crossbar. In the 59th minute Hithercroft took the lead when
Loz Dunn sent the ball out left to Matt Seaton who took the ball down
the line. He then crossed the ball into the centre for Baz to tuck
the ball into the net. Unfortunately, in scoring, Baz aggravated his
shin injury and had to leave the field to be replaced by Richard Vere.
Four minutes later Hithercroft were awarded a free kick when Tyrone
had been held back. Mark took the kick, playing the ball into the
middle and Loz hit a shot that rebounded from the underside of the
crossbar. On 64 minutes Richard took the ball down the right wing
and crossed it into the box from where Tyrone put the ball into the
net to give Hithercroft a 3-1 lead. Two minutes later Hithercroft
should have increased their lead when Loz threw the ball in from the
right and the first Hithercroft shot hit the crossbar and rebounded
back out but a follow-up shot was put over the crossbar. Snooker Leisure
Reserves then sent on their second sub and a few minutes later also
sent on a third when the centre back needed attention to a knee injury.
Hithercroft, as they so often do when having a 'bit of a cushion',
began to relax and let their opponents come back into the game. In
the 80th minute Hithercroft sent on their second sub, Dan Birch, to
replace Matt Seaton. With 5 minutes remaining Tyrone sent the ball
from a corner kick into the middle and Richard ran forward but headed
the ball over the crossbar. Two minutes later Alan sent a long clearance
through the middle to Dewayne who then pushed the ball to Paul, on
his right, but Paul's shot also hit the crossbar. With one minute
of play left Jamaine came on to replace Tyrone and took up a forward
position until the final whistle signalled a 3-1 win for Hithercroft.
