  O'Neill's Pub (16/10/2005)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth

On the evening before this game we were informed that our goalkeeper, Matt Hedges, had been taken to hospital by ambulance that day following a leg injury sustained whilst playing football and it was feared that he had broken his leg. Fortunately there was no break but he had a badly-bruised shin, his shin-pads saving him from more serious injury. Mark Sadler therefore took over the goalkeeper's role and Richard Vere moved up into midfield instead of playing in defence. Hithercroft had three subs available, one being Matt Seaton who returned after a few weeks absence following injury. The weather was sunny and warm but the pitch was slightly slippery because of dew. The referee this week was Mr K. Ruddock and Pam Ife again ran the line for Hithercroft.

The game started promptly at 10.30am and Hithercroft began to pressurize their opponents from the start. After 9 minutes Jamaine played the ball down the right wing to Dewayne who sent the ball into the middle but it ended up in the keeper's arms. (Not a pub name!). In the 17th minute the Pub keeper mis-kicked a clearance into the middle and Richard hit a ground shot that curved just outside the left-hand post. One minute later Mark sent a long ball down the middle to Richard but his shot was deflected past the post to give the home team a corner kick on the right. Dan sent the ball in low, Richard got his foot to it and sent it inside the right-hand corner of the net to put Hithercroft 1-0 ahead. The next goal was scored in the 32nd minute when Dewayne lifted the ball inside to Richard who promptly put the ball inside the left corner of the net for Hithercroft's second. Hithercroft then won a series of corner kicks, one resulting in an almost certain goal when Richard's shot was pushed over the crossbar by the leaping keeper. The game continued with Hithercroft doing most of the attacking with occasional breaks by the Pub team but the Hithercroft defence prevented them from getting close enough to the goal to get any major opportunity to score. At the half-time whistle the scoreline remained at 2-0 to Hithercroft.

At 11.23am the game resumed in a similar manner to that of the first half with Hithercroft being awarded a number of corner kicks but not being able to capitalise on them. In the 11th minute of the half Hithercroft made two substitutions, sending on Matt Seaton and Tyrone Francis to replace Dan Birch and Dewayne Dublin. One minute later Tyrone sent the ball in from the left wing, Richard controlled the ball and struck it between the keeper and the left-hand post to score his hattrick. At 11.42am Baz took a corner, sending the ball across to Tyrone, who headed the ball over the crossbar. Peter came on to replace Loz in the 68th minute and three minutes later Hithercroft had increased their lead. Paul had struck a powerful shot from near the right sideline and about 20 yards out from goal, the ball ending up inside the left hand post. In the 77th minute a Hithercroft throw-in sent the ball to Tyrone who crossed it inside for Richard to run onto but his resulting shot went just outside the right-hand post. O'Neill's Pub sent on a substitute in the 82nd minute just before Jonny needed treatment to his right knee. Two minutes later Baz lifted the ball over the keeper as he came off his line but the ball went just outside the far post. On the 86th minute Tyrone chipped the ball over the keeper and into the net but an off-side flag denied his place on the scoresheet. Hithercroft had another opportunity to add another goal when Richard sent the ball down the right and Baz crossed the ball into the middle. Matt, who was completely free, took his eye off the ball and completely missed what should have been a simple shot just three minutes from full-time. The whistle went at 12.10pm with Hithercroft emerging worthy 4-0 winners.
