Naphill Seniors (13/11/2005)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth

The weather was quite chilly and overcast for this afternoon game. There was some confusion over the kick-off time with some Hithercroft players (and officials) expecting a 1.30pm start instead of the arranged 1pm time. As a result the Hithercroft goalkeeper had not arrived by the time the game actually got under way which saw Hithercroft start with just ten players, Loz Dunn taking on the goalkeeper’s role until Matt Hedges arrived. The referee was Mr Clive Chard and the linesman’s duties were carried out by Brian Lewis in the first half and Pat Vaughey in the second.

The game eventually kicked off at 1.12pm and after 15 minutes Hithercroft were awarded a free-kick on the left and about 30 yards out from the Naphill goal-line. Baz David hit a superb curving shot that came down just beneath the crossbar and over the leaping keeper‘s hand to give the home team a 1-0 lead. At 1.32pm Matt Hedges arrived, allowing Loz to take up his accustomed mid-field position and restoring the Hithercroft side to the full 11 players. Eighteen minutes later Hithercroft went 2-0 ahead when Baz threw the ball in from the left about 20-yards from the Naphill corner flag, the ball being headed back out to him by a defender, and he hit a low shot that curved just inside the left-hand post. Shortly afterwards Baz came close to getting his hat-trick when he hit the ball from 25 yards out on the right but the ball dipped onto the top of the net, hitting the far stanchion. David Blackman also came close with a shot from just inside his own half but his shot was just a fraction too high.

In the second half, which started at 2.06pm, Naphill began to come more into the game increasing their possession and exhibiting better passing moves than their opponents. At 2.10pm Hithercroft’s Richard Vere had to leave the field with an injury and so Dan Birch came on to replace him. Two minutes later Hithercroft made a second substitution, Leon Read coming on into midfield, Matt Seaton moving up front and Tyrone Francis coming off. At 2.17pm Loz sent a long throw-in from the left, a defender headed the ball out of the 18-yard box but Loz sent it across to Leon, whose shot came off Naphill’s Arron Barlow and ended up in the Naphill net giving Hithercroft a 3-0 lead. Despite Naphill’s second half improvement they were unable to get the ball into the Hithercroft net and the scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle.

The above report is shorter and less detailed than usual as my Dictaphone batteries were running low and this made some of the playback occasionally unintelligible. In the other match played this Sunday Fleece Reserves, who had taken on some new players, won their away match against Bucks College Reserves 3-0. This meant that Hithercroft maintained their position at the top of the division having taken 23 points from 10 games, Cressex remained in second place with 17 points from 8 games and Bucks College Reserves are in third place with 14 points from 7 games.
