Fleece
Res (11/09/2005)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth
The weather was grey and overcast with very fine drizzle that lasted
throughout the game. In spite of recent good weather there had been
very heavy showers on Saturday, taking the hardness out of the pitch.
We had obtained the services of Mr Clive Chard to referee the game
and Pat Vaughey ran the line for Hithercroft. Alan McKie was unavailable
for this game as he was taking part in Counties Athletics and the
late arrival of Eugene, Terry and Paul saw the game start with them
as our subs.
The game got under way at 10.33am and there was little to choose between
the teams, neither showing any sharpness or accuracy in shots at goal.
Tyrone Francis had a couple of chances during the first 25 minutes,
both times chipping the ball over the Fleece keeper, but the first
was cleared on the goal line and the second passed harmlessly over
the crossbar. From a mis-kicked clearance by Hithercroft the Fleece
No.6 hit an accurate and hard shot but Matt Hedges managed to push
the ball round the post. From the resulting corner the ball came across
to the visitor's No.12 who drove his shot at the goal and, as Matt
dived to save it the ball took a deflection and ended up in the back
of the net, giving Fleece a 1-0 lead on 39 minutes. Shortly before
half time Jonny Bartlett received a blow to the ribs and left the
field, Hithercroft playing out the remainder of the half with 10 players.
For the second half Paul Morgan came on to replace Jonny and, following
a stern team talk Hithercroft began to exhibit more determination
but were still playing below their capabilities. Terry Carter and
Eugene Hepburn came on to replace Dewayne Dublin and Mike Pearce after
12 minutes of the second half. Hithercroft had a great opportunity
to draw level when Eugene took the ball down the wing and played the
ball into the middle but Terry's shot went wide of the left-hand post.
In the 14th minute Baz, with his back to the goal, received the ball
from Mark Sadler and he turned and hit a shot that went over the crossbar.
In the 28th minute of the half Loz Dunn sent a long ball down the
middle, Eugene ran onto it and hammered it into the Fleece goal bringing
the score level at 1-1. Unfortunately, a short while later Eugene
and the Fleece keeper collided as the ball came across and the keeper
fell onto Eugene's left foot that had recently healed after a broken
bone earlier in the year. Eugene had to leave the field and took no
further part in the final 10 minutes of the game, Hithercroft playing
it out with only 10 players, as they had done at the end of the first
half. However, there was no further scoring and so the game ended
in a draw.
