Cross
Keys (06/11/2005)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth
The first meeting of these two teams took place on Cross Keys' ground
which was muddy, wet and uneven. The weather was dull with rain throughout
the game and occasional gusts of wind. The referee that Cross Keys
had booked was unable to attend and so they supplied someone to officiate.
Pat Vaughey ran the line for Hithercroft during the first half and
Jonny Bartlett took over for the second.
The game kicked off at 10.32am and after 2 minutes Hithercroft won
a corner on the right and Loz Dunn went over to take it. He curved
a high ball in but, unfortunately, it curved back out again over the
crossbar for a goal kick. Shortly afterwards Matt Hedges sent a long
kick downfield to Dewayne Dublin but Dewayne's shot was blocked by
the keeper. Baz took a corner on the left for Hithercroft, Tyrone
Francis' shot was pushed out by the keeper but Dewayne then hit the
ball into the back of the net putting Hithercroft ahead 1-0 after
4 minutes. Hithercroft began to exhibit their superior speed and commitment,
dominating possession and territory. In the 23rd minute Paul Morgan
played the ball into the middle and Richard Vere took it into the
Keys' 18-yard box where he was brought down, the referee awarding
a penalty kick. Baz put the ball into the right-hand corner of the
net, sending the keeper the wrong way, and giving the visiting team
a 2-0 lead. Just 3 minutes later their lead was increased when Loz
played the ball forward, Richard took the ball to the left side of
the 18-yard box and struck a superb shot into the inside of the far
post. In the 34th minute Hithercroft almost scored their 4th goal
when Baz, chasing the ball from the goal towards the left corner flag
turned and had a shot but the ball hit the underside of the crossbar
and bounced out from the goal. Hithercroft had further shots on goal
from Alan McKie and Baz but were causing no headache to the Keys'
keeper. At 10.58am Hithercroft's pressure was rewarded when Paul Morgan
sent the ball forward, Dewayne ran through the defence and hit the
ball past the advancing keeper into the net for their 4th goal. Richard
then hit a shot from the left that the Keys' keeper turned round the
post before the half-time whistle was blown.
The game resumed at 11.27am and after 7 minutes Hithercroft sent on
Leon Read, who was making his debut for the club, to replace Paul
Morgan. Cross Keys were having a lot more possession in this second
half and were spending a lot of time in their opponent's half. At
11.44am Cross Keys made their first (and only) substitution and 10
minutes later Hithercroft sent on Jamaine Warner to replace Baz. On
the 75th minute Leon sent a great ball through to the left for Richard
to run onto and he drove the ball across the goal into the far side
of the net to give Hithercroft a 5-0 advantage. From a free kick just
outside the left corner of the Keys' 18-yard box Loz sent the ball
across and Tyrone's shot hit the underside of the crossbar and went
out for a goal kick in the 77th minute. On the stroke of noon Tyrone
threw the ball in from the left, Loz crossed the ball to Dewayne who
then went round a defender and struck an acute-angled shot into the
far side of the net, claiming his hat-trick and Hithercroft's 6th
goal of the match. At 12.07pm the Keys' keeper went down with an ankle
injury and play stopped whilst he received treatment. He was still
limping badly when the game resumed and after he had come well off
his line to hit a clearance kick Alan McKie responded by hitting a
high return from just inside the Hirthercroft half but the keeper
just managed to get back and gather the ball as it dropped towards
the goalmouth. Loz then sent the ball forward and left to Tyrone who
played it across the face of the goal. Dewayne ran in but missed what
should have been a certain goal. Dewayne then had another opportunity
when he lifted the ball over the Keys' keeper, who had gone down in
an attempt to gather it, but was unable to reach it to direct it into
the net. The score-line remained at 6-0 until the final whistle and
this result, with current leaders Cressex Club Reserves not having
a game this week, saw Hithercroft go clear at the top of their division.
