Bucks
College Res (18/09/2005)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth
The game took place at Bucks College ground in Kingshill Rd on a grey
and slightly chilly morning but the weather remained dry and the pitch
was in excellent condition. The College had booked a referee but he
had not arrived by the scheduled kick-off time. When he had still
not arrived after a further 30 minutes it was agreed that Brian Lewis
would referee, Pam Ife running the line for Hithercroft and the sole
Bucks College sub ran the other line. Hithercroft had Jamaine Warner,
Terry Carter, Dan Birch, Eugene Hepburn and Jermaine Young on the
touchline at the start.
The game began at 11.05am and after two minutes Hithercroft came close
to putting the first score on the card when Baz David beat a stumbling
defender, crossed the ball to Dewayne Dublin who then tried an overhead
kick that went over the crossbar. In the 8th minute Baz tested the
College keeper when he drove a hard shot at the left of the goal but
the keeper dived to push the ball round the post. At 11.26am Terry
Carter came on to replace Tyrone Francis who had started the game
suffering from a strained leg muscle. Five minutes later the College
came close when their No.7 headed the ball towards the top of the
goal and Matt Hedges had to leap up and tip the ball over the crossbar.
At 11.37am Loz Dunn sent a long throw-in to Terry but his header went
just outside of the left-hand post. Then David Blackman beat defenders,
turned inside from the left wing and struck a curving shot with his
left foot that passed just outside the left upright in the 43rd minute.
The half time whistle went at 11.50am with honours even, no goals
having been scored by either team.
The second half began at 11.57am with both sides unchanged but after
10 minutes of play Hithercroft's Dan Birch came on to replace Dewayne
Dublin. At 12.15pm the College used their lone sub to replace their
captain and Hithercroft continued to pressurise their opponents, winning
numerous corners and throw-ins but, when scoring opportunities arose
their finishing was very poor. In the 68th minute of the game the
College sent a ball down the middle of the field, their No.14 collected
it, ran towards goal and hit a long distance shot that went over Matt's
head and dropped down just under the bar to put the College 1-0 ahead.
Ten minutes later Hithercroft centered the ball and Dan tried a header
that went over the crossbar. At 12.31pm Jonny Bartlett came off and
Eugene Hepburn, a striker, went on in an attempt to get some goals
for the visitors. With about 2 minutes to go Baz managed to put the
ball into the College net but the goal was disallowed because of an
off-side flag. Baz later hit another shot that went wide of the post
and Paul Morgan hit an overhead shot that went high over the crossbar
before Brian Lewis blew the final whistle.
Bucks College were a good side and contained a couple of players from
their senior side on loan, giving Hithercroft an exciting game. Hithercroft
had shown an improvement over last week with defence and mid-field
playing well but, once again, most of their shots were off-target,
played straight at the keeper or delayed too long allowing the opposing
defence to regroup.
