AFC
Golden Cross - Subsidiary Cup (19/04/2006)
2005 - 2006 Season, Hithercroft Youth
Hithercroft‘s first game in this competition was called off
when IPA Dolphin were unable to get a team together. AFC Golden Cross,
who had become Division 3 Champions this season, had won both of their
other cup games and need to win this to reach the semi-finals. This
evening game took place on a firm pitch under cloudy but dry conditions
with a wind blowing along the pitch. The threat of rain was ever-present
but, fortunately, held off for the duration of the match. The referee
was Mr Alex Vickery and Pam Ife ran the line for Hithercroft.
The game got under way at 6.15pm and after 12 minutes Baz David had
put the ball into the Golden Cross net, only to be denied a goal by
the referee blowing his whistle and awarding a free kick to Hithercroft
for a foul on Eugene Hepburn just outside of the 18-yard box. Although
Baz’s free kick was lifted over the wall the ball was safely
gathered by the keeper. Four minutes later Leon sent a long ball down
the middle, the keeper came forward but misjudged it, Baz took the
ball round him but the keeper managed to get a foot to the ball and
put it out of play before Baz could shoot. On the 25th minute the
opening goal went to AFC Golden Cross when their No.9 collected the
ball in the middle of the field and struck the ball into the net from
just outside the 18-yard box. Hithercroft were continually being caught
off-side and, when they did get goal-scoring opportunities they dwelt
too long on the ball or hit off-target shots.
The second half started at 7.05pm and continued in a similar fashion.
Eugene hit a wayward shot at goal before, in the 59th minute, AFC
Golden Cross increased their lead to 2-0 when their No.12 hit a shot
that went in off the right-hand post. Four minutes later Dan Birch
came off with a blistered foot and so Dougie Carswell went on for
Hithercroft to replace him. On 79 minutes Eugene was replaced by Jermaine
Young in an attempt to make a breakthrough for Hithercroft. However,
on 81 minutes their opponents scored their 3rd goal when a cross from
the right came in to their No.8 who, totally free, hit the ball home.
Four minutes later Jamaine Warner came on for Hithercroft to replace
Matt Seaton and AFC Golden Cross also made a substitution, followed
two minutes later by their second change. In the 88th minute Hithercroft
were finally rewarded when Paul Morgan sent the ball forward and Jermaine
Young hit the ball past the diving keeper to make the final result
3-1 to AFC Golden Cross. They now progress to the semi-finals where
they will meet Wye Rangers.
