Marlow
Youth (18/11/2001)
2001 - 2002 Season, Hithercroft Under 15s
The
recent drizzly rain had made the Marlow pitch rather slippery and
muddy but it held up well during the match, which was played in
chilly and cloudy but dry conditions. Our team for this match included
Carl Davis, Asher Jennings and Delroy Robertson who were all making
their debut appearances for us. Asher and Delroy had returned to
us after some seasons playing for Holmer Green in Division 1 and
Carl had come from Prestwood Colts. Des Ife ran the line for Hithercroft.
The opening goal came thirteen minutes into the game when Marlow’s
Chris Taylor received the ball, took it down the right side of the
pitch and then hit it into the far side of the net past Phillip
Lines, the Hithercroft goalkeeper. Both sides had many good opportunities
to score in the first half but both failed to take advantage of
them. It took another 23 minutes before the next goal was scored
and this came from Asher who headed Delroy’s corner into the
home team’s net bringing the scores level. Within two minutes
Delroy, Asher and Jason Guy’s interpassing ended with a shot
that the Marlow goalkeeper hit back out but the ball fell to Dewayne
Dublin who shot the ball into the net to put Hithercroft into the
lead for the first time. Unfortunately, shortly before half time
Jason suffered another injury to his knee and was replaced in by
Adeel Iqbal.
Four minutes into the second half the Marlow number 10, from the
left side of the field hit the ball over Phil’s head to bring
the home team back level at 2 all. Hithercroft began to play more
as a team than they had in the first half with Kevin Ife and Duane
White playing extremely well. Duane provided some strong tackling
against the players of his former club. In the 21st minute of the
half Asher threaded his way past two Marlow defenders and put Hithercroft
back into the lead with a shot into the corner of the net. There
were a number of corners and shots on goal from both sides in the
final quarter of the match but there was no change to the scoreline.
Daniel Birch took one of the best corners, curling the ball in towards
the Hithercroft net but it was just too high and passed harmlessly
over the crossbar. The final whistle gave Hithercroft the three
points that they badly needed and, over the coming weeks as our
new players become better integrated, we should begin to move up
the league table.
Hithercroft’s ‘Man of the Match’ was awarded to
Carl Davis.
Hithercroft’s goals were scored by Asher Jennings (2) and
Dewayne Dublin.
Marlow’s goals were scored by Chris Taylor and their Number
10.
