Chalfont
St Peter Colts (26/11/2000)
2000 - 2001 Season, Hithercroft Under 14s
The
weather was dry and mainly sunny with a cold wind for this game.
Hithercroft could only turn out 10 players which led to discussions
as to which Dad looked the youngest to be the eleventh. Rocky Hudson
ran the line, leaving Des Ife, Rob Yandell and Kevin Fuller in contention
but it was decided that we all looked too old.
At the kick-off only three players (Paul Yandell, Jerome Warren
and Jason Guy) touched the ball before it ended up in the Chalfont
net after 15 seconds. Then nothing else happened for 30 minutes
with some rather scrappy and uninspired play from both sides. Then
Jerome received a good ball and had only the goalie to beat but
he hit it wide. Five minutes later Jason brought the ball in from
wide out, only to shoot over the crossbar. However, two minutes
later he made amends, scoring his second. Immediately after the
restart Paul tried a long shot which the Chalfont goalie tipped
over the bar. Chalfont then surged back and had a shot hit the upright
and then Jason barged his opponent off the ball but missed his goal
attempt. Just before half time Dewayne Dublin crossed the ball and
Jason initially mis-kicked the ball but then retrieved it and then
put it into the net making the score 3-0 at the turnaround.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Jerome missed a simple chance
and then, shortly afterwards, he crossed the ball to Jason who completely
missed the ball. Chalfont then came back and hit a shot just over
the bar and Dewayne missed a shot at the other end. Then Matthew
Lovegrove made a great cross to Freddie Quiney to score a goal for
Chalfont. This score seemed to liven up the game, giving extra confidence
to Chalfont and spurring Hithercroft on. Jason went round the opponent’s
goalkeeper to score his fourth goal and then Kevin Ife played a
great lofted ball from midfield for Jerome to run onto and he hammered
the ball into the back of the net.. Following an inter-passing move
between Jason and Jerome, Dewayne received the ball and scored Hithercroft’s
sixth. Then Dewayne and Paul combined well, leading to a cross which
Jason headed into the goal making the final score 7-1 to the ten-man
Hithercroft.
The score-line did not reflect the way that the game was played
as Chalfont had a lot of possession and Matthew Lovegrove was particularly
good. The Chalfont goalkeeper was often out quickly to the ball
and the overall performance of the visitors shows good promise for
the future.
The Hithercroft 'Man-of-the-Match' award was shared between Jason
Guy and Kevin Ife.
